TITLE: Harnessing Photon Addition and Subtraction to Engineer Multi-mode Quantum States

ABSTRACT:  An overview of photonic quantum technologies will be provided with a particular focus on our research in quantum state engineering of multi-mode optical fields. A key area of interest is the
use of photon addition and subtraction techniques, which enable the creation of quantum states with tailored properties for a variety of practical applications. We will discuss our experimental implementation of both photon subtraction [1] and addition [2] on the signal and idler beams of a multi-mode twin beam, as well as on the signal beam alone. By reconstructing the joint photon-number distributions of the photon-subtracted and photon-added twin beams using a photon number resolving detector (iCCD camera), which also determines the number of photons added or subtracted. Our comparative analysis of photon subtraction and addition across different optical fields—including multi-mode thermal states, sub-Poissonian states, and twin beams—reveals significant insights. Notably, we emphasize the advantages of photon addition over subtraction for single beams and the complementary nature of photon subtraction and addition for twin beams, particularly in enhancing non-classical properties. Additionally, we demonstrate the ability to perform photon addition and subtraction with up to 20 photons in the intense fields with average photon numbers in the tens. This highlights the potential of these techniques for engineering quantum states under realistic conditions. The generated states exhibit unique properties, making them promising candidates for applications in sub-shot-noise metrology and imaging.
